06/01/07
  • Captain Randy, onboard Assist Channel Islands, responded to the call for help from a Trophy 23 named Mary Ellen on the backside of Santa Cruz Island. The mariners had been fishing near Yellow Banks and could not get their engine started. The boat was safely towed back to Channel Islands Harbor.

  • While Captain Randy was en route to the vessel disabled on the backside of Santa Cruz Island, a second call came in from a 20 foot Wilson fishing in the same vicinity. Captain Randy arrived on scene and started to put the Wilson in tow for a tandem tow back to Channel Islands Harbor but the mariners were able to get their engine started so it was a stand down.
06/02/07
  • 30 foot sailboat, Calliope, went from a private slip in Mandalay Bay to Anacapa Marine Services for engine installation. Captain Randy onboard Assist Channel Islands was the tow captain.

  • A 24 foot Wellcraft disabled near Cojo Anchorage, Point Conception, called for a tow back to Santa Barbara Harbor. Captain Randy, onboard Retriever, responded to the call but the mariner was able to get his engine started and made it all the way back to Ledbetter Beach near Santa Barbara before it died again. Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol towed the boat the rest of the way in to the launch ramp.

  • 46 foot sailboat, Silk, lost its engine and called Vessel Assist for some assistance getting back in to a slip in Ventura Isle Marina. Captains Paul and Randy responded onboard Retriever.

  • Captain Randy, onboard Assist Channel Islands, responded to a 22 foot Seapro named Glen Boston disabled in position N 34:00.216, W 119:26.074. The boat was towed back to Channel Islands launch ramp.
06/03/07
  • Captain Randy answered the call from Bell Boy, disabled in position N 34:08.88, W 119:14.31. The boat suffered from an overheated engine with two persons on board and needed a tow back to the Channel Islands launch ramp. Assist Channel Islands was the tow boat.

  • A 24 foot Baja, El Pisano, suffered an electrical problem near Platform Gina and called Vessel Assist for a jumpstart. The jump was no joy so the boat was towed back to the Channel Islands launch ramp by Captain Randy onboard Assist Channel Islands.

  • O Boy, a Cabo 31, ran out of fuel in the shipping lanes while transiting the Santa Barbara Channel. The mariner called for a fuel drop and came in to Ventura to top off his tanks before heading back out to the islands. Captain Paul onboard Retriever were the fuel delivery team.

  • Hatt Squad, a Hatteras 41, lost an engine entering Ventura Harbor and needed some assistance getting back in to a slip in Ventura West Marina. Captains Paul and Randy, onboard Retriever, were the response team.

  • Aquaholic, a Seaswirl 26 with a starter problem, called for a tow back to the Channel Islands launch ramp. Captain Randy, onboard Assist Channel Islands, responded.

  • A Farrallon 25 with a starter problem called Vessel Assist for some help. Captain Paul, onboard Retriever, responded towing the boat back to the Ventura launch ramp.

  • Captains Jason and Paul moved 100 foot crewboat, Luke, for Ventura Harbor Boatyard. Retriever was the tow boat.
06/07/07
  • Captains Jason and Randy were the long tow team who went to retrieve the MacGregor 26 anchored at Smuggler's Anchorage, Santa Cruz Island. The boat, Buena Suerte, had been left on an anchor when the Coast Guard removed the mariner from the boat the previous afternoon. Assist Channel Islands was the tow boat.

  • Captain Randy responded to the 46 foot sailboat named Tesoro disabled near Point Conception - again - and needing a tow back to Santa Barbara. It was a long night for Captain Randy, he and Retriever did not return to base until 3:30 am. (PHOTO) (PHOTO 2)

  • Clean Seas II, a Catalina 30 (not the offshore oil supply boats!), wrapped a prop while anchored at Smuggler's Anchorage, Santa Cruz Island. Captain Paul responded, diving and freeing the line from the propellor shaft. Maverick was the response boat.

  • 38 foot Chriscraft, Chaser, lost battery power while anchored at Willow's Anchorage, Santa Cruz Island. Captain Paul responded on Assist Channel Islands and gave the boat a jump start, getting it back on its way.

  • Cibad Explorer, a 26 foot Wilson, suffered starter failure in position N 33:57.343, W 119:29.161. Captain Paul, onboard Assist Channel Islands answered the call for help towing the boat back to Channel Islands Harbor.

  • Captain Randy got the call from Big Johnson, a 27 foot Hydrasport, disabled near Painted Cave, Santa Cruz Island. The mariners aboard needed a tow back to Channel Islands Harbor, to a private slip in Mandalay Bay. Retriever was the tow boat.
06/10/07
  • Captain Jon went to help the 24 foot Century disabled at Smuggler's Anchorage, Santa Cruz Island. The boat did not have a name, it had no functioning radio, and there was no cell phone reception, so Captain Jon was dispatched on a possible wild goose chase. The search was made even more difficult by the fact that the mariners were not equipped with a GPS. Relay vessel Nightstalker was able to assist for a short period but then departed the scene to return to Channel Islands Harbor leaving Captain Jon to find his man. The boat was found and Captain Jon and Assist Channel Islands towed it safely back to the harbor.

  • Captains Bev and Paul moved Hokianga, a Mariner 37 sailboat, from a slip in Ventura West Phase II to Ventura Harbor Boatyard where it was scheduled for an engine pull. Retriever was the tow boat.

  • Captains Jason and Bev towed Hokianga back to its slip in Ventura West Marina Phase II after the boat underwent an engine installation at Ventura Harbor Boatyard. Retriever was the tow boat.
06/13/07
  • Vessel Fish Stick, disabled near Platform Gilda, called Vessel Assist for a tow back to Ventura Harbor. Captain Randy, onboard Retriever, responded. While en route to the mariners Captain Randy came across a Leatherback Turtle caught in a gill net. The turtle could not surface so was in danger of drowning. Captain Randy positioned Retriever near the net and worked to free the line which was wrapped around the turtle's neck. Eventually he was able to cut through the line and the turtle was able to swim away.

  • Islander 30, Carla Sea, suffered engine failure in position N 34:01.01, W 118:57.52, and called Vessel Assist for a tow to Ventura. Captain Randy, onboard Retriever, responded to this long case from Point Dume, returning to base at 3 am.

  • Captains Jason and Paul were the rescue team for Talluleh, a Californian 42 suffering engine failure. The boat was towed back to a slip in Ventura West Marina, A dock. Retriever was the tow boat.

  • Captain Randy responded to the Pearson 32 sailboat, named Allegro, disabled in position N 34:08.739, W 119:17.645. The boat was towed back to Channel Islands Harbor. Assist Channel Islands was the tow boat.

  • Captain Jason, onboard Retriever, responded to the disabled Bayliner 25 with 4 persons on board. The boat was towed back to the Ventura launch ramp.
06/15/07
  • Captain Randy, onboard Retriever, delivered fuel to the Radon 29 named Daybreak, anchored in Smuggler's Anchorage.

  • Columbia 35, Raven, needed a tow from a slip in Ventura West Phase II to Ventura Harbor Boatyard in order to step a mast. Captains Bev and Paul, onboard Maverick, were the moving team.

  • X2C, a Columbia 28, suffered electrical failure in Channel Islands Harbor. Captain Randy and Assist Channel Islands rescued the mariners, towing the boat back to Vintage Marina.
06/16/07
  • Pelican Witch, an Egg Harbor 33 out of Santa Barbara, ran out of fuel in position N 34:14.462, W 119:41.526. Captain Randy onboard Retriever responded.

  • Chriscraft 55, Southern Girl, lost engine power 4 miles out of Santa Barbara and called Vessel Assist for a tow. Captain Randy, onboard Retriever, responded.

  • Captain Paul and Maverick responded to the call for assistance from Layla, a Hunter 34 disabled in the Santa Barbara Channel. The boat was towed back to Ventura Harbor.

  • Laminar, a 31 foot powerboat, called Vessel Assist for some help after suffering engine failure in position N 34:04.159, W 119:21.61. Captain Randy, onboard Assist Channel Islands, towed the boat back to Channel Islands Harbor.

  • Captain Randy and Retriever went to the assistance of Stylin, a Searay 26 suffering engine failure. The boat was towed to Santa Barbara Harbor.

  • A searay 21 suffered engine failure near the Goleta Pier and called Vessel Assist. Captain Paul and Maverick responded from Ventura, towing the boat back to Santa Barbara Harbor.

  • Lovin Life, a Maxxum 25, lost an engine while attempting to dock in Mandalay Bay. Captain Randy and Assist Channel Islands responded, putting the boat away.

  • Captains Paul and Randy moved a 45 foot Searay to a new slip in Ventura Isle Marina. Retriever was the towboat.
06/21/07
  • Captain Randy went to the rescue of Fish Stick, a Radon 29, disabled at Chinese Harbor, Santa Cruz Island. Captain Randy and Retriever braved the Small Craft Advisory to tow the boat back to Ventura Harbor.

  • A 38 foot Mediterranean needed a tow from a slip in Ventura West Marina to Anchor's Way Boatyard for an engine installation. After the engine was hoisted into the cockpit the boat was towed back to its slip. Captains Jason and Bev, onboard Maverick, were the towing team.

  • Captain Jason,onboard Retriever, went to the aid of 24 foot Reinell, disabled just outside Ventura Harbor. The disabled boat was towed to the Ventura launch ramp.

  • Avanti, a Tiara 35, suffered transmission failure in Channel Islands Harbor and called Vessel Assist for a tow. Captain Randy, onboard Assist Channel Islands, answered the call, towing the boat back to a slip in Vintage Marina.

  • A 21 foot Bayliner suffered engine failure in position N 34:00.081, W 119:23.651 and called Vessel Assist for some assistance in getting back to Channel Islands Harbor. Captain Randy and Assist Channel Islands responded to the call, towing the boat to the launch ramp.

  • Captain Jason and Retriever retrieved Jane E, a custom 31 foot boat, suffering engine failure just outside Ventura Harbor. The boat was towed to its home slip in the Ventura Harbor Village Marina. (PHOTO)

  • A 26 foot Carver, with the unlikely name of Mr. Clean, fouled its prop and called Vessel Assist for a tow. Captain Randy went to the aid of the boat, towing it to Vintage Marina, Channel Islands Harbor. Assist Channel Islands was the tow boat.

  • A 20 foot Key West lost battery power while fishing near Emma Wood State Beach. Captain Paul and Retriever responded giving the boat a jumpstart. The jump was a joy and the boat made way under its own power back to Ventura Harbor, but once again lost batteries just outside the entrance. Captain Paul and Retriever put the boat in tow and brought the mariners to the launch ramp in Ventura.

  • Captains Bev and Jason went to the assistance of La Dolce Vita, a 30 foot sailboat, suffering dead batteries. The boat was put in tow just outside the Ventura Harbor entrance and then put away in their home slip in Ventura West Marina, Phase II. Maverick was the tow boat.

  • A Starfire 21 with a spun prop called Vessel Assist for a tow to the launch ramp. The boat, named Blue Line, had drifted on to the end of a dock near Cisco's Sportfishing after becoming disabled and was able to tie up safely until Captain Randy could finish his last tow. Boat and mariner were safely assisted to the launch ramp.
06/26/07
  • Captain Paul moved 45 foot powerboat, Great Escape, from one private slip to another in Mandalay Bay. Assist Channel Islands was the tow boat.

  • Captain Paul rescued two jet skis from their predicament. One of the skis was beached on Kiddie Beach in Ventura Harbor and the other one was near the Ventura Pier. Retriever was the tow boat.
06/27/07
  • Captain Randy delivered fuel to a sailboat making way under sail. The boat, Free Enterprise, was inbound Channel Islands Harbor when the mariner onboard requested a fuel drop. Assist Channel Islands was the delivery vessel.

  • Captain Randy rescued Scorpion, a 21 foot Chriscraft, from near Scorpion Anchorage, Santa Cruz Island. The boat was towed back to Ventura Harbor. Retriever was the tow boat.

  • A Columbia 34 sailboat lost engine power while transiting from Ventura Harbor to Channel Islands Harbor and called Vessel Assist for a tow. Captain Randy on board Retriever responded, towing the boat safely to its home slip in Penninsula Yacht Marina.

  • Captain Randy responded to the disabled vessel Enticer in position N 33:59.84, W 119:32.03. The boat was towed to Channel Islands Harbor by Captain Randy and Assist Channel Islands.

  • Captain Jason, onboard Retriever, towed catamaran M&M from Anchors Way Boatyard to a home slip at Ventura Yacht Club docks.
06/30/07
  • Captain Bev responded to the call for assistance from Hawk, a Tiara 32 disabled in Ventura Harbor. The boat needed a tow back to Ventura Isle Marina. Maverick was the tow boat.

  • Mi Novia, an Anderson 26, suffered started failure near Yellowbanks, Santa Cruz Island. Captain Tom, onboard Retriever, responded towing the boat back to Ventura Harbor launch ramp.

  • A Farallon 25 suffered an overheated engine near Yellowbanks, Santa Cruz Island. Captain Paul onboard Maverick responded, towing the boat back to Ventura Harbor.

  • A 22 foot Boston Whaler lost battery power in position N 33:59.51, W 119:31.787. Captain Paul onboard Maverick gave the boat a jumpstart and the mariners were soon able to continue on their way under their own power.

  • Lori Lynn, a Chriscraft 33, lost engine power and called Vessel Assist. Captain Randy, onboard Assist Channel Islands, responded towing the boat back to a slip in Vintage Marina, Channel Islands Harbor.

  • Captain Randy and Assist Channel Islands were the rescue team that responded to Yellowbanks. A Skipjack 25 suffering engine failure called for some help from Vessel Assist in getting back to Channel Islands Harbor.

  • Little Fawn, a Chriscraft 35 foot sailboat, suffered engine failure while attempting to transit the Santa Barbara Channel. The mariner called Vessel Assist for some help getting back to his slip in Channel Islands Harbor and Captain Jason and Retriever "retrieved" him.
